Today is 21st May. The day is better remembered as “Buddha Purnima” which marks birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Gautama Buddha. According to Hindu calendar, Buddha Purnima aka Buddha Jayanti falls on the day of the full moon in the month of Vaisakh.
The day is celebrated all over the World. The very interesting thing related to Buddha is that he was born, attained enlightenment & died under a tree.
Many eminent personalities and people took to twitter to greet people on this auspicious day. “Buddha Purnima greetings to everyone. Gautama Buddha’s noble teachings have impacted millions of people over centuries. He is the epitome of knowledge, peace and compassion. May his teachings continue to inspire us to create a peaceful and just society,” reads PM of our country Shri Narendar Modi’s greeting.
Buddha Purnima is also known as Vesak Day (Wesak Day). It is the greatest festival of Buddhists all over celebrated with great ceremonial rituals. In Bodh Gaya (Bihar), pilgrims from all around the world come on this occasion.
The Buddhist temples are decorated, prayers and sermons are held and processions are taken out that day. In India, the people marks this day by taking holy dip Kshipra River. The devotees gather in large number to take dip in the river. It is believed to be a way to attain salvation. Devotion and dedication marks the occasion of Buddha Purnima.
